Powerball vs. Mega Millions: Compare Odds per Play Correctly
By MyBallWin · Reviewed · 2 min read
Using the rules checked October 3, 2026, Mega Millions has slightly better jackpot odds per play: 1 in 290,472,336, compared with Powerball's 1 in 292,201,338. That narrow probability difference does not account for price or prize structure.
Use the current game formats
The Powerball jackpot count comes from five white numbers out of 69 and one red number out of 26. Mega Millions uses five white numbers out of 70 and one Mega Ball out of 24. Its larger white pool is offset by its smaller special-ball pool. Calculate C(70,5) × 24 to obtain 290,472,336 complete Mega Millions outcomes.
Older articles may describe a different Mega Ball range or quote a different jackpot denominator. Check the rule date before comparing figures. A historical result can be accurate for its own era while being unsuitable for a current-rules comparison. Our comparison is explicitly per play and uses the official rules linked below.
A smaller denominator is not a complete decision
The ratio 292,201,338/290,472,336 is about 1.006. Thus the relative difference in jackpot probability per play is only about 0.6%. Both absolute probabilities remain extremely small. Presenting that relative improvement without the underlying odds can give readers an exaggerated impression of what changes between the games.
The official U.S. base price is $2 for Powerball and $5 for Mega Millions, with jurisdiction-specific Powerball bundling exceptions and optional features where offered. Price is a separate comparison dimension. A fixed spending limit buys different numbers of plays depending on the game and options. A per-dollar calculation is still not an expected-return calculation and should not be presented as one.
Compare like with like
Separate jackpot odds, overall prize odds, non-jackpot prize amounts, and multiplier rules. The probability of receiving any prize says nothing by itself about whether the prize exceeds the amount spent. Likewise, an advertised jackpot value is not a probability and does not change the number of valid combinations in either game.
For a clear side-by-side review, write the rules date beside the figures and use one complete play as the unit. Consult official sources again when rules change. MyBallWin's comparison page helps organize the differences, while this guide explains the denominator. Neither historical frequencies nor a number generator can turn the modest mathematical difference between these games into a reliable way to win.
