# How a Mega Millions Random Number Generator Should Work

A current-rules Mega Millions generator should select five distinct white numbers from 1–70 and one separate Mega Ball from 1–24. Uniform generation gives each valid complete line the same chance of being suggested. It does not predict the official drawing or purchase a ticket.

## Validate the output before evaluating randomness

A generated line must contain exactly five unique white values within the permitted range. The Mega Ball must meet its own range check, but it may have the same numeral as one of the white balls. For example, a white 12 together with Mega Ball 12 is allowed. Two white 12s in the same line are not.

Sorting the white values makes a suggestion easier to read and compare. It does not make the selection less random, because the ticket represents an unordered set. Keep the Mega Ball visually and semantically separate. A display that sorts all six numbers together loses the information needed to interpret or use the line correctly.

## Uniform selection and weighted selection differ

One conceptual uniform method is to shuffle the eligible white-ball list, take five values, and select the Mega Ball independently. The shuffle and special-ball selection must use appropriate unbiased random choices. Another method samples without replacement. The implementation details matter because merely calling a function random does not prove that every valid set is equally likely.

A frequency-weighted mode intentionally favors some numbers over others based on past data. It therefore produces a different distribution of suggestions. That may be offered as a historical-data experiment, but it should not be described as improving the chance of a future jackpot. The official drawing does not adopt the generator's weighting merely because its input came from an archive.

## Know what the tool does and does not establish

Repeatedly generating lines until one looks appealing adds a human acceptance filter. The final choice may no longer be uniformly distributed across all valid combinations. That does not make the chosen line invalid, but it is useful to understand why output preferences and a formal random sample are different concepts. Duplicate lines across separate clicks can also occur naturally.
